The Society of Rheology Turns 97: Colloids and Soft Matter Head to Boston This October

If your research touches how soft materials flow, deform, and assemble, one of the best rooms to be in this fall is in Boston. The 97th Annual Meeting of The Society of Rheology runs October 25–29, 2026, at the Hilton Boston Park Plaza — a meeting that gathers the community studying the mechanics of complex fluids, from polymer melts and gels to colloidal suspensions and field-responsive materials. For a group working on colloidal hydrodynamics and soft matter, the program reads like a map of adjacent territory worth visiting.

A program built around complex fluids

The technical program spans a dozen symposia, several of which sit squarely in the colloid and soft matter world. “Colloidal Suspensions and Granular Materials” and “Self-Assemblies, Gels, and Networks” cover the structure-flow coupling at the heart of suspension physics. “Interfacial Rheology, Surfactants, Foams, and Emulsions” speaks directly to multiphase soft matter, and “Flow-Induced Instabilities and Non-Newtonian Fluids” gathers the low-Reynolds-number and viscoelastic-flow community. Two newer tracks are worth flagging: “Rheology of Field-Responsive Materials and Soft Robotics” — a natural home for work on magnetic and field-driven colloids — and “AI and ML in Rheology,” reflecting how data-driven methods are reshaping the discipline.

The plenary lineup is a strong draw on its own. Howard Stone (Princeton), whose work defines much of modern microhydrodynamics, headlines alongside Roseanna Zia (University of Missouri), known for colloidal dynamics and Stokesian-dynamics simulation, 2026 Bingham Medalist Roger T. Bonnecaze (UT Austin), and 2026 Metzner Awardee Jeffrey Richards (Northwestern). For students, the Rheology Research Student Symposium and a short course on tribo-rheology run October 24–25, just before the main program.

Why it belongs on a colloid scientist’s calendar

Rheology is where the microstructure of a soft material meets its macroscopic flow behavior — exactly the bridge that colloidal-suspension research lives on. Whether the question is how dipolar interactions organize a magnetic suspension, how active particles reshape the stress in a fluid, or how a gel yields under load, the measurements and models on display in Boston are the ones that connect particle-scale physics to material-scale response. The meeting also functions as a meeting point across the American Physical Society’s Division of Soft Matter, AIChE, and the Soft Matter Association of the Americas, making it a useful place to find collaborators and benchmark methods.

To students in our group and across UPRM: a national meeting like this is a high-value place to present, to see where the field is heading, and to meet the people whose papers you have been reading. Boston in late October, with the fall foliage near its peak, is not a bad backdrop for it.
